EV service requires skills in batteries, charging systems, electric motors, and high-voltage safety.
$24.34 per hour

Options range from a one-semester EV certificate for existing technicians to a 16-month automotive diploma with EV instruction.
As more electric vehicles enter service, repair shops need technicians trained in battery systems, electric motors, charging diagnostics, and high-voltage safety. EV training can help new students enter the automotive field and experienced mechanics expand their skills.
The International Energy Agency reports that global electric car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, including battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. A larger vehicle population creates a need for qualified service providers, although local hiring demand varies.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 median wage of $50,620 annually, or $24.34 hourly, for automotive service technicians and mechanics. Its occupational data does not provide separate national medians for EV-only and gasoline-only technicians, so it does not establish a typical EV wage premium.
